Dunedin & North Otago

Day 8

The morning in Queenstown was sunny and as promising as the last day's evening. We enjoyed our breakfast under the open sky.

First thing to do in the town of thrill and adventure is very inspetacular: going up the gondola to have an tremendous view of the lake and the city (which grows from 3000 to 30000 people during high season).

A little higher, adjacent to the observation & cafe deck was the Luge, a downhill course made of concrete which you can race yourself. The small vehicle has got a break a stiring wheel and nothing else - pure fun!

On the top of the mountain is the starting point for paragliding. All day around you can watch skydivers and paragliders in the air above Queenstown. After doing the Lurge I was quite energetic and felt like doing it ...

... so I did! Lasting about half an hour plus free photos of you in the air and the great view it's quite worth it (185$ with Highadventure (025-240 7045), also try here (0800-SKYOUT)).

After all this exhalerating stuff I had to calm down a little. Lunch in the main shopping street was just the right thing. 'Downtown' is quite neat and cosy.

On our way out of town there are some more 'touristy spots'. First one is the 'ShotOver'-jet boating where you travel a narrow creek bordered by high rock faces at high speed.

Another one is NZ oldest bungee jumping place: the Kawerau Bridge. The scenic wooden-steel construction is 46m high. There the commercial bungee jumping facility was opened in 1988 by AJ Hackett.

On arriving Wanaka in the warmest afternoon sun we have our tea at a cafe bar with view to Lake Wanaka. Wanaka as city provides the same opportunities for tourist as big brother Queenstown ...

... but in a more relaxed attitude & it's definetily cheaper here. An attraction Queenstown can't offer to you is 'Puzzling World', a hands-on museum around puzzles. It hosts a building as 3d maze which tries to fool your senses.

Driving towards Makarora we enjoy the beautiful countryside along lake Hawea (first) and lake Wanaka (later on). With the green-blue water of the lakes and the mountains in the backdrop this is a truely scenic road. You should take your time for this gorgeous trip!

The way back is in much brighter light conditions now. The clowds have broken up to give free the georgous blue sky. Enjoy!
